The last independent assessment identified the University of Liverpool as one of the top three centres in the UK for Computer Science-related published research.
We work closely with an impressive range of industry partners to develop technologies and applications in cutting edge fields, from mobile computing to artificial intelligence.
Strongly funded, we have recently invested £5m in facilities and equipment to support our teaching and research. It has created an inspiring environment in which world class academics and ambitious students can do their best work.
The knowledge gained from our research activities feeds directly into our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. We are developing our modules all the time to take account of new technologies, industry trends and methods.
Our programmes cross the Computer Science spectrum and combine cutting edge theory with extensive practical training. There are also joint degrees, so you can study ICT with subjects such as business, engineering and bioscience.
Key figures
•    Over 30 academic staff involved in research and teaching
•    7-strong technical support team
•    Approximately 400 undergraduates
•    Nearly 100 postgraduates on taught and doctoral programmes
•    Over 1,000 people enrolled in our on-line Masters programmes
The 2014 Research Excellence Framework rated 97% of our research as being world-leading or internationally excellent, the highest proportion of any CS department in the UK.
With our close industry partnerships and Russell Group status we enjoy strong funding and have recently invested £5m in our facilities. It is the perfect setting for world class experts to do ground-breaking research.
To best support our research we have flexible platforms that reflect our core interests and strengths. These platforms inspire innovative cross-disciplinary collaborations, with specialists throughout the University and across the world.
The current research platforms are grouped into two main sections, each containing a number of more specialised areas. These are:
•    Algorithms Section
o    Algorithms and Optimisation
o    Automata, Computability and Complexity Theory
o    Economics and Computation
o    Networks and Distributed Computing
•    Artificial Intelligence Section
o    Argumentation
o    Data Mining and Machine Learning
o    Knowledge Representation
o    Robotics and Autonomous Systems
o    Verification
