The Product Owner is the liaison between the development team and the customers, the product owner must work closely with both groups and make sure the team understands what features are needed in the application. The scrum sprint begins with a planning meeting, the product owner explains the priorities and features of the application to the development team. The product owner prioritises the user stories from the backlog and then the development team knows which stories to work on during the scrum sprint. The product owner is there to answer questions from his/her development team in order to help clarify any specifics as they develop the application.

The product owner defines and prioritises the features of the application, maybe changing them after each sprint. They assess the results and either accept or reject them always keeping users informed of whats happening and getting their feedback. The Product owner carries the success or failure of the project on their shoulders and is responsible to the stakeholders of the company. There is a lot of pressure and it is easy to revert back to old ideas which will make the project suffer in the long run, therefore the product owner should focus their time on what matters thus reducing time wastage.

The Product Owner must create and maintain the Product Backlog. The Product Owner should keep his/her eye on the ball as software changes are constant and they have to be abreast of these changes. The Product Backlog must be tailored prior to the Sprint Planning Meeting so that the Big Data development team remains productive. Product Owner prioritises the Backlog according to business value, this should be done before the Sprint Planning Meeting, each story ordered by importance.

They should help with Epics, Themes and Features being put into user stories so they can be achieved in a single sprint and assist the development team in understanding what is required during the sprint. The Product Owner should constantly remind the team of its goals during the sprint, this acts as a yardstick by which the team can measure their activity and progress.

The Product Owner should have the customer at heart, engaging the customer and company stakeholders alike to ensure the Team is building the right product and delivering the correct ROI. They can direct the team in a different direction at the end of every Sprint and therefore must be ready to do so if necessary. They take part in daily Scrums, Sprint Planning Meetings and Sprint Reviews, it's a busy environment and they must be present at every meeting to be able to adapt things if the needs arise.

The Product Owner has the authority to accept or reject work done at the end of every sprint, they ensure work that needs to be redone is fitted into the work plan and that the development team adapts to the change in landscape. The Product Owner is the voice of the team and should ensure that all channels of communications are open and that the projects have the right amount of support. They can stop a Sprint if they believe it needs a different direction due to something such as a competitor releasing a new version. This is something that is rarely done however as all work work done up until that point is lost.
