Its a fantastic time to be interested in pursuing a career in Data and Analytics whether that be from a Maths and Statistics background or an associated academic background in business or science, what is needed however is the ability to relate Data and Analytics findings to a real world business environment and make sense of the data and convert it into realised business formulas to be used at board level. Salaries are above the IT industry average and that looks set to continue as demand is already far outstripping supply and that only means higher salaries in the short to medium term as companies compete to recruit and retain the very best Big Data and Analytics talent.

The courses delivered by the various universities throughout the UK can look at the Big Data and Analytics agenda from many different angles. Courses involve aspects from many different disciplines including computing, quantitative methods, as well as communication & presentation skills and domain experience. One of the challenges faced by universities seeking to address this skill-gap and offer courses suitable for the growing needs of business analytics is to be able to prepare students for the real business world and the demands on their skills that will occur. It is argued that it is impossible within the timescales of a one-to-two years masters to cover all of the aspects involved.
Within the courses available , themes evolve so most courses will teach you certain aspects of the industry so it is important to understand which area you wish to pursue.

One theme that Universities follow on their courses is to help you develop your skills in the use and application of various technologies, architectures, techniques, tools and methods. These include data warehousing and data mining, distributed data management, and the technologies, architectures, and appropriate middleware and infrastructures supporting application layers.

Another theme will enhance your knowledge of algorithms and the quantitative techniques suitable for analysing and mining data and developing decision models in a broad range of application areas. The project consolidates the taught subjects covered, while giving you the opportunity to pursue in-depth study in your chosen area.

Teaching approaches include lectures, tutorials, seminars and practical sessions. You will also learn through extensive coursework, class presentations, group research work, and the use of a range of industry standard software such as SAS, SPSS, iThink, Simul8, MS SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services, and Oracle Data Mining Suite. Taught modules may be assessed entirely through coursework, or may include a two-hour exam at the end of the year.

Core modules include Data Mining, Statistics, Programming, Database management, Data Visualisation and Dashboarding, Risk modelling and web and social media analytics and social media analytics.
